Located in downtown Denver, The Populus is a new urban hotel that merges nature-inspired design with environmentally conscious hospitality. Designed by the world-renowned architecture and urban design firm Studio Gang, with interiors by Wildman Chalmers Design, the project reflects the surrounding ecology and cityscape while actively supporting the environment—planting a tree for every night booked.

Studio Gang, led by Jeanne Gang, shaped the building’s distinct identity through its facade: a series of uniquely shaped windows inspired by the eye-like patterns found on aspen tree bark. These windows vary in size based on the space’s function—rising up to 9 meters at street level to frame the entrance and restaurant, while offering panoramic views from the upper floors toward Denver’s State Capitol and the Rocky Mountains. The façade design also plays a functional role, with outward-extending “lids” that provide shading and improve energy performance.

The interiors, by Wildman Chalmers Design, echo the aspen grove concept with a layered, natural material palette and textured forms. From the warm, wood-toned ground floor lobby and restaurant, up through guest rooms designed as the “trunk” of the tree, to the rooftop restaurant, each level reflects a different part of the forest.

Materials are carefully chosen for sustainability: reclaimed wood from Wyoming snow fencing, biodegradable carpeting, and beetle-kill pine used in custom furniture. The studio, led by Heather Wildman, is known for its creative and sustainability-driven approach to hospitality interiors.
